.::. Repainting .::.

In  a few months' time, we would have reached our MOP (Minimum Occupation Period).  *OMG* Next year would be the 5th year since we've got our place.  Time really flies, doesn't it?

So, after our vacation in Boracay at 'The Lind' hotel, I was very inspired to paint our room.  I liked the color palate and design of the new hotel and this darker blue-grey color along their corridors.  I liked it enough to persuade the husband to paint our place together.

The main colors were greys, turquoise and blue-grey, I really liked the style of the hotel.

So, we went to buy paint and brushes and spent a few weekends on painting our home.  The husband made some not-very-functional newspaper hats.  To small for me, we didn't use them.

Initially, we only wanted to paint the master bedroom and one wall in the guest room.  I wanted to paint a stripped wall, that would also look great when the room is converted into a nursery *someday*.  Alas, the husband suggested chevron stripes instead, knowing that I liked them more - BIG MISTAKE.  Let's just say that chevron stripes are extremely tiring and time-consuming to paint.  We spent at least 2 days on that wall alone.

UntitledUntitled

First, you had paint a base coat, the lighter color of the chevron strips.  Then, you need to measure the walls and decide on the dimensions of your chevon stripes to make it fit nicely to your wall.  Then, we used cardboard to make a few of these shapes as stencils to mark the walls with pencil and tape.

We took hours to finish and align this wall, and we drew arrows to remind us which area needed paint.

Tadah!  After taping, paint the areas that should be painted, remove the tape and touch-up.

Here's the completed guest room with our pull-out bed:

By the time we painted our master bedroom, it was a breeze.  We finished in a few hours with all that taping, moving furniture and 3 coats of paint.  We used Dulux Connecticut Blue for our master bedroom, a lot darker but I quite like it though it did not exactly turned out as what I envisioned (and there's quite a few other shades of blue and greys that I liked too).

Here's the 'before' photo:

And here's the new color:

Oh, and I received a set of bedside tables as my birthday present this year too!  We got rid of the wobbly Taobao ones we got when we moved in and upgraded to these beautiful solid teak wood ones from Second Charm.  The husband said 'May our marriage be as solid as our bedside tables!'.

.::. Home Sweet Home .::.

The last few months simply flew by. We have been too busy living life, enjoying our freedom and couple-hood.

Both of us have been traveling quite abit and missing each other all the time. I don't exactly mean it that way. It's just that he usually flies out on Saturday when I'm flying in on Sunday! And so we miss each other and go 2 weeks without seeing each other. I have been to Shanghai, Hanoi and Seoul the past few months, and the husband has been to China and Italy for work trips too. I really enjoyed all my trips this year, every single one of them. Hanoi with the husband was so much fun!

We have finally collected our new dining chairs from Crate and Barrel. Those 2 year-old ones from Taobao ain't of that good quality and not very comfortable. We have been chair-hunting on and off the past year, but the husband has an atas butt that can't seem to find a comfortable and nice-looking chair that is also affordable. Everytime a chair catches my attention and pass the look test, the husband has to do a sit test. Most of them fail the sit test, apart from a few that cost like $800 each. We finally settled for these.

It was supposed to take 3 months to indent and arrive in Singapore in October. But since we have been traveling and couldn't find the receipt, we waited and waited for the call that never came. We had to call  Crate and Barrel, only to realize that the chair is already there. Pretty bad customer service for such a brand!

Home looks like this now. I love how the chairs fit into the whole place, and they are pretty comfortable chairs!

The thing about home is that no matter where you go, you will always be back and thankful for a place you can call home.

Feeling all warm and blessed these days, in a very peaceful and thankful state-of-mind. =)

.::. Day 93 .::.

Today, we celebrate another little milestone in our journey. We had our first meal at our home. We sat down and finished the last 2 episode of Amazing Race on the sofa. We cleaned our home the first time together - he vacuumed while I mopped.  The home is almost ready now, and it really feels like home.

MBR mattress (we haven't bought a bed frame). Surprisingly, we still have quite abit of space in the room!

The fridge came later in the day, and the shoe cabinet is not getting enough attention since my door is always open. I love the entrance's crystal light.

The kitchen looks like this now.

There's so much to be thankful for, so much to look forward to and so much to celebrate.

I'm thankful for such a great and loving husband, such nice neighbors (they got me a 'opening soon' and 'open' sign plus a door stopper for my 'cafe' and even drove me to grocery shopping and carried them up for me), really supportive parents who helped me moved stuff and waited for my deliveries while I was at work, amazing friends who will visit and bring my kitchenaid over tomorrow!

Really looking forward to afternoon tea with the girls tomorrow.  =)

.::. Day 92 .::.

Most of our living room furniture is here. We have not bought a console, a coffee table and a mirror for above the sideboard.

The fridge, washing machine, mattress and chairs will come tomorrow!

.::. Week 13 .::.

Have been updating my renovation progress more diligently at the Renotalk T-blog than here.  It's been very tiring these few weeks, and I'm always rushing somewhere with a long to-do list. With the new job and carpentry issues, we are really up to our neck.

We've arranged for furniture/appliances delivery this Friday and Saturday.  And my parents have been so nice to help me move stuff over when I'm at work. They must be really eager to see me move out, totally more excited about moving stuff over than me.  My mum probably emptied half her kitchen stuff and moved it over. =_="

Some pictures of completed renovation, before things are moved in.

.::. Day 83 .::.

Our place is 95% done! We're pending changing of some hinges and backsplash. Carpentry rectifications were completed today, still not perfect since laminate chips at the edges is still visible, drawers are not 100% flushed, holes are also visible and some drawers are still stiff.  Then again, I'm all ready to move on and look forward to cleaning up the place and make it comfortable.  I really do like how it looks like and feel comfortable being in it.

The touch-ups with crayon or paint is still visible.

The home looks like this from the entrance now.  =)

Kitchen with sink and hob/hood and working space.  I like this configuration as I'm always rushing to wash/cut vegetables or meat while my garlic sautés.  It really saves time for food preparation!

And my tiny MBR toilet.

After all the carpentry touch-ups, it'll finally be time for Mr K to touch-up on my painting and hand over keys! It has been a long 4 months, of which 3 months were taken for carpentry works and delays.  Such a horrible experience, and I really hope he gets what he deserves.

I really pity his other customers who has children or elderly in the household and are rushing to vacate their old place, forced to move into a half-renovated place with bad workmanship, chasing them to rectify and complete the works while staying in it.  Imagine all the dirt and dust and inconvenience it will cause them.  Meanwhile, they will only care about bringing in more customers and getting people to sign on the dotted line and pay deposit even when they can barely cope with everything. Communication within the company is non-existence and everything is wrongly or badly done. It irks me that they still profit from such work, while causing people so much anguish. There will still be people who do not do enough research, still be impressed by big showrooms and freebies and cheap internal laminates carpentry. I truly hope that all unethical business people who makes their money at the expense of peoples' anguish get what they deserve from the higher power above.

But as I told the husband, everything happens for a reason and everyone will get what they deserve.  The husband asked me if we deserved such carpentry work, and I told him, everything happens for a reason. I'm glad we got through this fine, and it might even have brought us closer.

It's still us, against the world.  Bring it on. =)

.::. Week 9 Concluded .::.

We finally have some progress after all that chasing.  Kitchen carpentry and toilet vanity cabinets were delivered this week.  But without solid tops, plumbing can't start.

My toilet ledges and last toilet door is also up!

IMG_4500

The MBR ledges.

IMG_4511

Common toilet ledge.

IMG_4515

We had to re-choose our shoe cabinet and feature wall laminates.  I chose the white textured ones.  Originally, we had to choose from their in-house brand (imported from China/India but branded as from Italy), which was painfully limited.  I was so excited looking at all the amazing textures from the different laminates booklets!

IMG_4504

I didn't find the workmanship really good, since there are things like splinters like this.  It's probably not seen though.  I wonder if it's normal?

IMG_4523

First day of installation.  Only a PRC carpenter and bagala was working (PRC calls his co-worker bangala =_=").

IMG_4530

Common toilet vanity.  I'm not particularly satisfied with the common toilet vanity, probably because of the laminate.  It does not have the feel that I wanted to achieve, and I wanted concrete/cement screed laminates at first.  However, the laminates choice was so limited, and our top choice was out of stock.  =(  Hopefully, it will look better with the mirror and granite top up.

IMG_4533

First day of installation too.  I'm happy to have about 70cm of working space between the hob and sink!

IMG_9985

And this was the almost completed kitchen after 2 days of installation.  The PRC carpenter worked alone the second day, and I would say that he has a better work attitude and responds to our questions.  He did quite abit of work himself the second day, and it's the first time I've heard of carpenters working alone.  Usually, they work in groups of 3-6 and finish all installations in 2-3 days.

IMG_9986

View from dining area.

IMG_9987

The sink/hob/fridge side of the kitchen!  The husband has insisted on his huge 2-door fridge which took up almost 1m of space.  I'm happy too because I've 70cm of working space!

IMG_9995

View from the service yard.

IMG_9993

Boxing up the pipes.

IMG_9991

A close-up view.  I'm getting them to change the dish rack as we wanted a plain wooden board instead of having a frosted glass.

IMG_0003

An even closer view. While it looks nice and there's a shallow cabinet in-front of the pipes for storage, there's this weird planks of wood and even visible nails!  It's bad, since we wanted to add metal plates inside the cabinet just in-case of any pipe leaking.

IMG_0006

Another problem is that the cabinet is too near the clothes rack, and we can't let it down!  It will scratch the whole top part of the cabinet.  For some reason, he made the top cabinet slightly wider than the bottom one.

Starred Photos

I've to say that overall, I'm quite happy with what the carpenter has done.  It's not easy for him, since a lot of our requirements were not communicated to him, and the poor guy has to redo quite a few things, like the trays inside my carpentry, and drawers which were supposed to be metal!

IMG_9997

Here's another of my favorite doors in the house.  I love all my toilet doors.

IMG_0002

And lastly, my tiny MBR vanity cabinet.

They were supposed to bring in the people for solid top/granite measurements, but it has not been done yet.  Carpenter says it takes 3 days after measurements, but well, I'm not very sure if they can get moving and get it done by next week.  The other carpentry's delivery is also not confirmed yet, but hopefully, we can finish everything by mid-August.

I love how everything is looking now

The husband is away for work for the whole week and I'm going for a short-trip with the girl to Bangkok late this week.  Without his chasing and knowing that we'll be away, I doubt there will be much done next week.  =/
